Jack Wilkins
Live in Boston, 1984
After the recent passing of my dad’s jazz idol, Jack Wilkins, my dad wanted to do something to honor him. He found an unseen clip from 1984 of Jack Wilkins playing a gig in Boston that he wanted to release on Spotify in his honor. As the resident family designer, he trusted me to create the cover art.
I created 2 design concepts for this project. Resources were low: I had 3 low-res, scanned PDF images captured in the 80s (designers know, not the most ideal), as well as only a weekend to complete it.
Version 1 (left) represents the feeling of being in a darkly lit jazz club late at night, illuminated by the iconic red lighting heavily seen in jazz clubs and album art during that decade.
Version 2 (right) was intentionally designed in the style of his previous album art. Although we loved the mood of the first visual, we went with this version on the right as it felt more editorial, and easier to read in the smaller sizes that it will appear in on Spotify.
